Veterans, especially recent veterans, have been hard hit by the opioid epidemic and the rise in other substance use disorders (SUD). Problems of chronic pain and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) make substance use and abuse more likely.
Since 2011, the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) has treated SUD with contingency management (CM), a technique that promotes abstinence from drugs and alcohol. The technique is simple, costs little, and boasts a high success rate. More than 4,000 veterans have participated in a 12-week contingency management program at more than 100 VA medical centers.

The Navy Exchange Service Command has revamped its student-reward program just in time for the new school year.
The NEXTgen Scholars Program still offers all qualified students the opportunity to win $2,500, $1,500, $1,000 or $500 each quarter. Along with the monetary award, each winner will now receive a certificate and medal, whose ribbon reads “In Honor of Academic Excellence.” The next drawing is at the end of September.
Any eligible full-time student who has a B-grade point average equivalent or better, as determined by their school system, may enter the drawing. Homeschooled students can also qualify with acknowledgement that the student has a “B” average or equivalent record of accomplishment.
